We stopped for a few hours at the Belize Zoo, just west of Belize City, on our way south. It was our one sure way to see some of the more elusive animals, although not nearly as satisfying as seeing them in the wild. They have signs up saying all the animals they have are animals that would not be able to survive in the wild for one reason or another. They even had a baby Howler Monkey, clinging to it's mother's back. It was pretty had to see, but we did find it.

In the zoo I made my first real association of the Ceiba Tree with its name, and discovered that the young trees have huge thorns on them.
